Maurice is making a big effort for this one and deserves support. All proceeds are going to the South West Children's Hospice - an excellent cause.

The Somerset Hall is a great venue - easy to get to / find with plenty of parking. It's got a separate bar and one of the best dance floors in the area.

As for the "Nationally Recognised" DJ, well it's me  ::) . As it's on their web site, I can let you all know that Jon Brett has booked me to DJ at the Rock Bottoms weekender in January 2007 in Torquay (so he knows who I am :D )

Of course with me Djing a great mix of tunes is guaranteed. I've found some tasty tunes that you will never have heard at a jive event before (and they're absolutely stonking). Who knows there may even be the odd surprise in the mix.

This Saturday 29/7

Somerset Hall, Wyndham Way, Portishead 8 'til 12 entry just £5

And yes I agree with Lin come on chaps rally round - Maurice deserves support, we don't want to lose another event

The floor was great, the music well was not as expected, to much swing/lindy for us Lerocers, and I must say as there were quite a lot of begginers there, they were not to happy.By quite a few comments that came our way.
But a very good effort from everybody, all in the name of Charity, so well done. To Maurice and Co.

"One mans meat is another mans poison" Balancing a set for everybody is just about impossible.

I'm sorry that Lin and those she spoke to felt that there was too much swing played - almost all of the comments (well bar 1 actually and Lin's now)  I had last night were very positive.

Maurice expressed himself to be very pleased and suggested that the silent majority were happy, this was backed up by a good number of people came and thanked me personally at the end of the evening.

The set list is below I've marked the tracks I'd play at a swing dance (even if they aren't strictly Swing - 4 of them are more RnR).

Hiya Andrew,

Sorry I couldn't make it either.  I think we all went a bit ott at the BAWA the night before, so was too pooped for Sat.  Lyndsey also went out for a nice meal with her hubby I believe.

Ohhh... live and learn I'd say.  I lurv your music Andrew, but perhaps its not really for a beginner donimanted crowd, a bit of tailoring, and std maintream pop possibly!   :)

One probem, I think, people are having troubel finding out what is on

The diary on this site does not cover the St Bonns Dances or events out side of Bristol.

UK jive does not cover Kingswood; Portishead or Nailsea or one off local events

Events not listed in UK jive, geneally have lower attendance

I think that's a very fair point Phil. Getting people to know that event is on is hard enough without not using all of the tools available. I think that Portishead' s UK Jive entry is still associated with Lou which is a bit of a problem. I don't know why Kingswood & Nailsea don't use it (perhaps they don't like "outsiders"  :o ).

I'm beginning to see all sorts of other problems though for promoters at this time of year which clearly influence attendance.

The Heat
Holidays
Counter events such as the Harbour festival (was it good by the way? seemed as though it might have been a bit damp!)

Oh and getting most Bristol people (it's not just the dancers & present company obviously excluded) to go more than 1/2 mile for anything

PS Maurice told me that he expected to clear about £100 for the charity - not bad bearing in mind that the Somerset hall is expensive to hire

The diary on this site does not cover the St Bonns Dances or events out side of Bristol.

Was only emailed this week with a list of LeRoc 2000 events for the latter half of this year.  Unfortunately I rely on people to tell me what's on, and to tell me when an event changes.  I can't be telepathic as well as look this good!  >:D  I must admit that the emails I get for LeRoc 2000 always come from "Team at LeRoc 2000" and they don't want to give me the name of the person sending the info.  Very odd, I must admit.

I managed to get some new dances up on the calendar and events pages yesterday, but still plenty more to go.  You should find the next Nailsea dance on there and the LeRoc 2000 Christmas dance too (same night as the Weston Christmas Ball - shame on LeRoc 2000 for that one!)

It didn't help that I've been rebuilding my study and computer over the last few weeks / months, plus holidays, plus jobs, plus kids, plus (oh yes, nearly forgot) wife, plus...  :'(

I will try to get some more of the missing events on to the calendar tonight if I can.

John.

The Bristol LeRoc / modern jive dance classes are diverse and provide a blend of teaching styles and music styles that are complimentary. If you want to keep them... go to your classes and support them! Check out the free dance, music and theatre clipart images in the new Clipart Library
