A to Zeppelin
« on: December 13, 2006, 11:44 AM »
...i think that covers everything alphabetically ( dunno about 3 dog night, etc.) but rather than tag things to other people's threads i thought i'd start one myself. Lyndsey hinted at an 'acceptability factor' in music but didn't elaborate which still leaves me perplexed why -> zero rock/prog/blues music gets played.

here's a perhaps inauspicious example of a 'young person' trying a track i had thought about and perhaps having some difficulty - not least with her attire - though having fun :

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ueTFKzdDgw8

i'll add some more of what i think might be interesting tracks that i have dotted around the site, later.

...'young person' - not being patronising (in view of the fact that most site posters are younger than me) - it's just that i'm slightly surprised that the dancer would even know of the track - it ain't the sort of thing on radio 1, etc. - perhaps her parents.

Not sure about the track (but better than call on me) but the video that goes with it is amusing (and not as sexist as call on me). It's been knocking around for ages on the club scene but is due for release on 1 January. I expect I'll get it to add to my collection

One thing I keep reminding myself is that just because it is possible to dance to a track doesn't mean that you should try to get people to dance to it. I'm a fan of The Smiths & I love the song "There is a light that never goes out" - It's perfect for MJ rhythmically but I just can't bring myself to play it at a dance. Likewise a lot of rock can be danced to but just doesn't have that spark that makes it a good dance song (not the same as a good song necessarily)

But examples I will play:
Muse - Supermassive Black Hole
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Sampled by Jamelia now I notice)
Stones - Brown Sugar
The Jam - Precious
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Supersticious
Robert Palmer - Some Like It Hot

Blues (as in Rhythm &) - I play loads regularly & so do the more "enlightened" DJs

...don't knock it too much (though it passed me by at the time - i still liked the music) as it takes the pressure off a little, if one's not so bothered about the latest status symbol  ;)

I agree that it might be a mistake to play a tricky track at a 'big do' but there are people, eg: at Jongleurs, who dance to tracks which i would think more difficult than some of the things i have in mind. Anyhow, when are you having your next Sunday session, Andrew? - i'm more 'up for' the odd challenging track on a weekend.

one or two afterthoughts about what people might like : i have a hunch that bowling the odd googley, might go down fairly well - i mean it's possible to get sick of eating chocolate - it's easy and it's sweet but sometimes something a little different is interesting. The track by 'love' - sounds a bit girlie, so not claiming to be a fan - i would think might be worth a try. It's slightly morose (minor chords?) but has some modulation :

Doesn't ZZ Top come after Zeppelin, alphabetically?

Their "Sharp Dressed Man" is a Jive classic, which we so rarely hear in the S West

you're right of course but ZZ is not in my Chambers dictionary  :P

ZZ Top definitely counts as 'rock' - i've got a cassette somewhere.

Kingswood Derek played some enjoyable 'French' sounding music last night (can't be more specific - even less sharp by 22:00 hours). I made an effort to listen to some of the more popular disco type music that gets played and the thumpy beat (sythensised drum?) doesn't seem to change much during the tracks (1st impression - never listen at home). Whereas, with the sort of music i'd like to try (when sufficiently alert) the prominence (and tempo) of vocals, instruments, percussion varies during the performance and even pauses - which might allow for some interesting interpretation.

...taking the ejucation theme :

http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wGr-eknsf8&mode=related&search=

...any character similarity to any over sexed, over paid england managers is purely coincidental. (might be danceable but like a lot of Tull tracks i find it a little depressing, somehow - but still listen)

...and just to link tull with bricks (as in walls)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ovA62fch6VU - i'd put on a longer version but life on dial up is too short. I think Ian's voice would be stronger - but i believe he's a smoker.

might just add the odd link on this post rather than bore people with new ones.

Some raw live Jefferson Airplane
Is this Tango music (somehow strikes me as such)

here's a rock classic which i think most people will know - it's Alice - no, not who the £*£*&££"! alice, cooper but it's LITTLE BIT NAUGHTY as there is a slight absence of clothing (ie :NUDITY)  but i think it would make a good dance track - 'unplayedaroundwith' (again : as i moaned about the AC/DC track i posted - it's all about image and not like the older stuff - musicianship, but even if alice isn't pretty the lady is  :crazy2:)

 - blimey, taking the car engine out would take whole new complexion  ;)

here's the toned-down-in-the-model-dept. Poison video :

some not for dance :
Nice, ELP, greg lake

america - the nice :

elp - knife edge

- cut down version

- slightly blunted

Lucky Man - not quite as good as 20 years before :

a less well known stones single :
(keeps getting re-posted - eventually the copyrighters will give up)

curved air :
  - didn't realise just how commercial it was (charted) compared to their other offerings - seemed to hit the right chord wandering round the grimey backstreets of pre-plastic england.

Heep, 'easy livin' :

and wizard :

Fav? Purple :
- 'woman from tokyo' - good recent version with young US guitarist?
,got removed, this could be the one Ian Gillan is asking people NOT to buy - he was 'at war' with r. blackmore :

and

family :
