Dangerous Moves?
« on: February 10, 2005, 11:10 AM »
It's an old topic but I've seen an emergence of a handful of chuckers.. - macho blokes who seem to think dancing consists of turning any old lady upside down without asking permission..

as well as the dangerous aspect of it, most of them havent got any rhythm..

I danced with a chucker last night!  :o  In fairness the moves were complicated and carried out quite competantly, which for me was fine, although I am not sure how a beginner would have coped.

He did a simple move that I absolutely hate - the secret drop I think it is called.  I hate it because I rarely do it and am never absolutely certain if the signal that I have just received is for that or something else!

Worse than that though as Graham says is lack of rhythm........ ;)  ;D

Yes--me thinks I know who you mean! and I hope you didnt mean 'old lady' literally ! Why didnt you save me Graham? I thought you were going to ask me to dance but then along came 'the scaffolder' and I got chucked about  without permission--and--even worse-- with no sense of rhythm! But we did have some lovely dances later--thanks ;)

Dangerous airsteps and "energetic" dancing is one thing...

Dangerous airsteps, "energetic" dancing and bad timing is a whole different kettle of fish...

You thought he was a scaffolder and I thought his occupation was starting old cars with a starter handle!  ;D  ;D  ;D

I was on the point of telling him off, but thought better of it!   :-[

John.

In myn experience dangerous airsteps and "energetic" dancing are most commonly done by those who can't stay in time with the music ......

True, but there's nothing wrong with that combination if you are in time and you do know what you're doing (and your partner does too).

It's only when there's a big difference in approach or a big difference in the skill level of the partners (and the man runs at full-tilt) that problems come in.

Is it Andy and Rena (?) who do some really amazing dancing (lindy-ish) - that's energetic and air-step-based, but at expert level they're fine...

What i saw in the posts in this thread seemed to be as much about "being chucked about without permission" as "being chucked about with no rhythm".

Airsteps should be for consenting adult couples.

And not done too close to other people! I've lost track of the number of times I've been next to a scary airstep person & feared for mine and his partner's safety!  :o

John.

Yes, of course, John. there are a small number of people (well, excluding full time professional dancers) who can do that.

And a much larger number who think they can ...

I think you'll find Graham's original post did relate to rhythm, but you are, of course, quite right. No one should force airsteps on a partner without their full consent.
