Tango Music
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:27 PM »
I've just found a tango CD I bought ( rather a long time ago and never used) as a practice disc.

It reminds me I've had several people say to me how much they liked Tango music, and that it was a major or the major attraction of the dance.

However some ( not all ) came from a (sadly deprived ?) ballroom / salsa background.

At the moment for me tango music is only slightly indistinguishable from noise.  >:D

So how do modern jive dancers who've tried a little tango find it.

Is it something just to put up with while obtaining the benefits in terms of technique lead/follow frame etc. etc,.

or

part of the attraction of tango. ?

Hi Frodo,

There are a few of us MJ's who have 'moved over'.......... Speaking for myself, I agree that some of the music can be a bit iffy, but on the whole, it is quite inspiring, as it enables one to interpret the music.  It tends to be more complicated than 'pop!  Have you listened to the 'Gotan Project' or the 'Tango Project'?

If you ever get a chance to get up to Tango fusion in London, you will find plenty of music that has a Tango feel that is easy for both MJ's and Tango dancers to dance to.

For me, the benefits of Tango are vast - I think I have suggested before that you go along and try a class........actions speak louder than words.  Have fun!  :)

Two Tango-tempo tracks used regularly in MJ - In Tango by In-Grid, and Tango in Harlem* by Touch and Go

I also have an excellent Tango CD which I bought in Buenos Aires Airport (just passing through) called Tangos Classicos, by the Quinteto Tipico Buenios Aires. I often listen to this just for the music

*incidentally, what do other people do for the rude-word break in TiH? The music seems to require a freeze-and-pose, such as putting the lady into a dip, and you end up gazing straight into her eyes when the singer says "F*ck You" - which seems inappropriate.

How about a quick flick of the head and looking the other way?  Just hope you don't end up looking in someone else's eyes though!  ;D

Depending on who your partner is, you could always lip-sync it?  >:D

Thanks Elaine.  I didn't think of it as being more more 'complicated' but that makes a lot of sense.

Sorry - I should have made clear that I've done (or more properly attempted) Tango classes at different locations.

I've can't recall a single Tango track that has made me want to get up and dance ( unlike all other dance styles I've tried ) though.

It is interesting that musical interpretation is a key attraction of the music.

I am assuming that is the Jango thing.  I never considered having a look, but it's perfect to finish off long weekends around London.

I'll watch out for those.

Another couple of links but for listening rather than buying CDs.  I use these Tango stations every now and then - they're pretty good.

Radio Tango: mms://streaming.netizen.com.ar/la2x4.  Spanish language station with adverts but some good music in between.

Radio Cubik: http://www.radiocubik.com/.  Select Radio Tango from the left side of the screen and then the "Listen Now" button corresponding to the bandwidth you want,  It uses Realplayer - you get a listing of what you are listening to which is useful.

I find there's something really satisfying about listening to a radio station from halfway around the world.  Great for unwinding after work, or while drinking coffee after Jive!
