David and Lily at the Newman Hall
« on: February 27, 2005, 10:10 AM »

Really enjoyed the West Coast Swing lesson and David and Lily's demo! Fab, fab, fab!  Just wish we could have a lesson every week!  I love the principle of slotting and there seems to be so much scope for interpretation.  :D

Anyone see Matt, Becky and Jenny practice their double trouble??  Awesome!  I am really looking forward to seeing them strut their stuff at Blackpool!  :D

Wonderful evening, with some great dancers - the only downside was the floor.  It was really, really fast,  but better that than having it called off!

Yes. iagree WCS seems to go well with MJ, noticed a few fitting in WCS moves during the evening  :D
I?m off to the next workshop offering WCS

Yes.  iagree Best double trouble I have even seen. good luck in Blackpool

Yes.  iagree The floor had been polished. I went flying as did several other dances  >:(

Richard tells me it was a floor like Newman that did his Knee in. He  had abandoned his dance shoes for outdoor shoes

Yes I think  iagree with you Elaine

Fast floors aren't a problem if you take trainers AND shoes to a dance - you pick and choose depending on the floor at the time then (or indeed as I have sometimes seen) depending on which part of the dancefloor you're on!

Luckily the venue wasn't too slippery when I was there last, but I must admit fast floors have led me to the occasional tumble too.

Sounds like the event went well though - that's good.

I hope they take the competition by storm.  I got my first dance with Becky last night.  Wow!!!!!!!!!  ;) Won't be slow in taking advantage of such a treat again.  She easily out-wiggled me and had super interpretation.  Great style. :P

I actually liked the floor!  :)  But my dancing's gone all slidey at the moment so it suited me.  ::)  The thing I didn't like was the music.   :( :(  Some pretty uninspiring stuff got aired (and yes, I'm probably being miserable! This is just an opinion! ;)).  Why have a West Coast Swing workshop in the afternoon and then not set aside a fair portion of the evening with slower tracks with which to practice?  ???  Worse than that, though, was the repetition of tracks that went on or the low-volume tracks which had to be turned up about a third of the way through.  (Or others turned down!)  >:( It's great the way that Sherif dancers with all his punters, but I really wish he'd install someone to operate the decks rather than leave a mix-CD playing.  David B asked earlier in the evening, before the freestyle, who was DJ-ing that night?  The merits, responsibility, artistry, mechanics, etc. of DJ-ing are discussed (and over-egged) "elsewhere" at great length.  But, fundamentally, a DJ appears a pretty sound concept!!!!  (Pardon the pun.  :))

Glad to hear that Simon & Becky danced at last!  ;)

The workshop was absolutely fab. Sorry I missed the freestyle, but I had an early plane to catch. BTW... it's fun here in Budapest!  ;)

Let?s be honest there is something wrong if you have to change shoes if you move from one part of the floor to another

The following are quotes from 2 well known web sites

?The use of trainers is not encouraged because they stick to the floor too much when turning and may cause a knee injury.?

?As for shoes, wear something that will allow you to move freely on the dance floor, we recommend leather sole shoes.?

I would attend another Dave and Lilly workshop even it was held on a skating rink

But I would think twice about going to another frees style at Newman

I agree with Simon re the music at the freestyle and I didnt like the hall much including the floor which was like an ice-rink in places--not all of us have trainers as well as shoes. I fell quite heavily during one dance-- luckily nothing broken!

Trainers?  What with a dress - I don't think so!   ;D

Actually Simon, it did amuse me that David and Lily were asked to give a demo to encourage those who had done the work shop to try out their WCS, when the next track that was played was totally unsuitable!

I asked someone on Monday night, why they has not attended the West Coast Swing  workshop.
The rely ? I don?t, like  aerials and drops?

I explained there were no   aerials or drops
Well she replied, ?Look at the advert?
I have ( see below)

I knew Dave and Lilly would not be teaching drops
But may be  - event organisers should pay more attention on how they advertise events

PS I think I may have found a local WCS teacher
He needs convincing there is a demand
