Do we need more local dances?
« on: March 11, 2005, 09:27 AM »
Newbie / long time lurker here dancing for about 6 months

Nowhere local last Saturday, nowhere this Saturday. Next weeks fine then nothing for 2 weeks.

I'm not digging at anyone here it's more a question of is there the demand for more dances to be put on have people tried and nobody showed? If there was a dance somewhere like Portishead on a  "free" saturday would people turn up? are there too many dances already?

Just wondered ...

Well... it's a bit of a double-edged sword.

We had a discussion about it back on the old forum, about whether having 2 local dances on the same weekend (both Friday and Saturday) was a good thing. I don't think there was consensus.

Some organisers have experienced a drop in numbers when there are 2 dances on the same weekend. But not always.

Personally, I find Saturdays a better evening to go out on. But that's just me!

Oh, funnily enough, Viva are planning a Portishead dance - but we're going to keep the first one very low key as the P'head class is full of fairly new beginners and we don't want to scare them off, but we do want to have a freestyle where they can put into practice what they've learnt in a more relaxed party atmosphere. Assuming it works, more will undoubtably follow!

Just one dance this weekend.  See you all at The Elmgrove Centre.

Interesting question

In view of the fact that both winter balls sold out, there probably is enough dancers to fill a Friday and a Saturday dance Provided it was   a quality event and did not class with anything else

It's not necessarily organising something for both Fri & Sat I'm talking about but the weekends when there's nothng - seems to be one weekend a month without a dance  :'(

I'm sure that extra events in the gap weekends would be supported (I just don't have the courage to test my conviction)

From what I have heard venues are reluctant to have dances on a Saturday, because they do not make as much money at the bar as they would with other events.

Is this really the case?

Is this why the elmgrove dance is all ways on Friday?

Is there a secret bar that opens on Saturday we have yet to discover?

I cannot believe this is the case with ether folk house or Nailsea

I think you`ve hit the nail in the head Martin!!!

A venue would prefer an all day wedding reception and evening event, where food is bought, consumed and where the bar is drunk dry. Than filling their venue with a few dancers drinking one 1/2 pint of orange juice and making it last all evening. Sad, yes, but thats the reality of it. :(
