Funky Greek salsa
« on: March 13, 2008, 04:40 PM »
The monday night salsa classes that used to be @ Que Pasa , Corn St, are now, as Bex said, at the above bar right opposite, the times of classes remaining exactly the same. Went there this Monday and thought it was an improvement--three floors, nice bars/drinks/food, and more space for lessons & dancing--although still loads of people.
Had some good freestyle dances which gave me a bit more confidence--and managed to last out 'til 11pm !! Can't compete with Bex's 2 a.m I'm afraid--not in the week!!  :o Have done three nights of Salsa in a row this week, so a bit exhausted--but hoping that, as well as learning a new dance style, it will improve my le-roc. :)

This is good news as I wasn't that impressed at Que Pasa when I tried it mainly because of the lack of space - (I hope they don't have people walking across the dance floor during the lessons which happened then). However, like Anita, I don't think I could last until 2:00am - not in between 2 hard days at the office!  I am going to the Club Cabana Salsa Night at Hanham Folk Centre on Saturday, www.clubcubana.com/Event.htm (at least I think it is Saturday as the email I got said Friday 15th(?)).  I also hope for a good night of dancing this Saturday which I didn't get last Saturday at Clifton Le Roc because of it being a Competition Night.  Like a lot of people I spoke to I thought that the Competition went on for far too long.  I went there and paid over my hard earned money to actually have a dance and not just sit or stand around watching other people dance for most of the night! If I had known that it was going to be like that I wouldn't have bothered going.  So for that, shame on you, Clifton Le Roc, shame on you! :knuppel2: :idiot2: :crazy2:

Ooooh, that's a bit unfair.

It was advertised as a competition night and not a standard dance event...

Anyway, I think it's good that the competition was organised and run - having something a bit different to the normal night is nice sometimes.

John.

Tried Salsa about 5 years ago (before jive) and found it just a little too intimate  ;) and would feel uneasy now.

Ok for your beautiful things (imho) but i ain't one of 'em  :'( - though the old muscle definition is pretty good (manual p/t job now -the boss has bought some smarter, heavier tables for me to carry  :smitten: ,NOT  :D - , chopping wood, carrying water, rowing, allotmenting, etc.) - does help with dips  ;)

I'm sticking with modern jive (what a relief for the Salsa ladies) as a more open dance form.

  stp wtf hb

As John says It was advertised as a competition night

Bob did you expect to continue dancing while the completion was on

As can be seen from this thread

http://www.leroc-in-bristol.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2356.0

a lot people did enjoy themselves

The SWLC is always a great opportunity to meet, dance with and watch our top dancers

It was an excellent evening with very little time given to formalities, announcements or presentations

I am afraid the days when I could dance nonstop for 4 hours are over, so I welcome the opportunity sit back and enjoy watch other dancers

And unlike going to a show at the Hippodrome I can get up and dance with them afterwards

Sorry you had such a bad time Bob, but it was clearly advertised as a competition night and we worked really hard to minimise the time taken up with the competition.  I'm not ashamed by what we put on that evening, in fact it I was very proud of the evening and I had many, many positive comments on the night and subsequently by email.

Hope it doesn't put you off coming to our other events.  Just keep an eye out for the March dance next year!!

Blimey Dave Salsa's not more intimate than you want it to be (you sure it wasn't a Lambada class you wandered into  >:D )

My personal gripe with Salsa is the "music" - I get bored after an hour of it so the thought of sticking with it until 2am is just terrifying

..agree about the music AW though a lady who taught Spanish told me that the lyrics of some of the songs were more than a little 'naughty' which sort of connects nicely to my difficulty with the dance form.

After going through some formal footwork it just seemed that i spent the rest of the class within rather close clinches, often with an attractive blonde lady and found it a 'bit too much'.

I don't mind a little 'dirty dancing' - we did the ballroom? or penguin steps? at clifton recently - but am happier with the more mobile moves.

Changing the subject slightly, i was wondering about selling my home and sticking all my things in an industrial unit (i think commercial property prices are going to take a bigger hit than domestic), pocketing some cash and going back to live in Sunny Scunny  ;) for a while.

here's a track (tainted love) that has some interesting, pre soft-cell history (though i like the pussy cat dolls' video , without the sound) :

- sounds danceable.

Ahh Gloria Jones now there's a great version of the song

Bit quick for MJ - it's a Northern Soul classic and as such works best as a two step (you can fell the 1 - 2 big time), the soft cell & pcd versions are just plain awful for MJ (the soft cell version was in Ashes to Ashes last night on the beeb) maybe marilyn manason's version would work?  :uglystupid2:

Gosh Bob the Bracers this really is a case of grumpy old men if there ever was!  I enjoyed watching the others dance, and it was quite clear that the evening was primarily a dance competition!  Not everyone wants to compete, but it is good that Clifton runs this event for people that want to.

The competition probably took up less than 1 hour out 3 3/4 hours and spaced over 3 sections, so there was nearly 3 times as much dancing as competition.

Clifton Le Roc Competition Night ? I was aware that it was a Competition Night and didn?t expect to dance when the Competitions were on. Grumpy Old Man? That is probably because I haven?t been able to go dancing as much as I used to for a long time because of no car/or problems with the car/ being out of work/living on my own. etc. It is well known that dancing is good for you as it releases endomorphines which are nature?s happy pills and as I have a lot of stress, (I guess as others do), because of the above when I can go to a dance I want and need to dance all night.  I always feel so much better all round after a good night?s dancing which I always thank the organisers, DJ, on the night in person, and the rest of the team and of course the ladies who dance with me again in the forum afterwards.  Dancing is for me the only way for getting rid of the stress as I don?t drink much alcohol, smoke or take any other forms of drugs ? I have tried meditation but can?t get the hang of that ? or indeed Salsa at present.  I realise there was more dancing than competition but it seemed as soon as I got into a flow with the dancing we had to stop and start again, and again which I didn?t like very much.  I am really glad that most people enjoyed the Competition Night and that it was such a great success for Clifton Le Roc.  I am really looking forward to the next Clifton Le Roc dance but I will not be attending any more Competition Nights.  As for Salsa I will be going to the Funky Greek Salsa in the near future now that they have improved the facilities.
And finally 1, how about this for a good dancing track I am also a big fan of Al Murray?s Happy Hour http://www.thepublandlord.com/and I agree with him that Queen are the best rock band ever. That is where I got the Shame On You bit from, which was meant to be in fun and tongue in cheek as they say.
And finally 2, one of my all time favourite Queen songs which to me says it all

the Freddie track (ie: 'living on my own' - lively track, ok the lyrics are a bit down but the music up tempo  :-\) brings back happy memories of the Godot Bar in Darmstadt - a pub favourite. Sounds good for dance and just sounds good.

I've never heard of Al Murray or his happy hour, so obviously didn't know Bob the Bracer's comment was tongue in cheek.  Maybe he's not as grumpy as previously thought!

PS  Just watched a bit of the posted clip of Al Murray - but not something I would listen to - not sure why he has to keep saying the f*** word.
