Club XL
« on: April 03, 2008, 04:59 PM »
Hey i tried out ANOTHER salsa venue that i has an awesome time at

Club XL in Bath on a Tuesday night,

Again like most of the salsa venues, its in a club, and initally you have that nasty sticky floor going on where the drunkards at the weekends have spillt drinks, but the dance floor was suprisingly nice.

It was better lit than Warehouse, and not quite as loud also, one of the walls runnnig along the side of the dance floor is a celing high MIRROR...... i love it.

The dancefloor is set down from the spectating bit , so you get a really good view of who is dancing

one downside is the Loos......, hmmmm go in backwards and dont look down and try not to tocuh anything! they were grim so only use if you are absolutley busting.

I didnt do the class, i just went for the freestyle, but everyone was really frienly there and got loads of nice dances in.

There were some familar faces from the other local salsa classes too, so im sure if you've been to either Warehouse, Funky Greek or Que Pasa, you will recognise a handfull,.

Ok, my review over, i will be back , though it clashes with Bath Ceroc.... but Salsa goes on til 12. So stay til 1030 at Ceroc, then nip over to the club for salsa :)

Thanks for the reviews--always good to find out about other places to go--might try them some time in the future. You going to try the evening @ Java on 18th organised by the Que Pasa/Funky Greek crowd? Someone said it was good last time--although being in town late on a Friday night puts me off a bit. :-\

It's interesting to read about these different Salsa venues but do they all teach the same style & if so which one - Cuban or NY? (was watching a dvd this PM and realised that it was COMPLETELY different to the salsa we're learning - NY ).

Has anyone come across venues where they dance "on 2"?

I think most classes in this area teach NY salsa, which is the crossbody lead style im still not toally sure. so i might have got that wrong.

Yes! and its sooo sooo hard. The Que Pasa (Funky Greek ) Group, ahve done it two times before, its not every week they do it, just as a special class, but its like learning everything from scratch again.

It was really good last time. It was the opening night for their montly dance. The venue is gorgeous. It has white glittery walls, that look like snow and sparkle, and the ceiling is domed with little stars twinkling in it, and the dance floor is light up and flashes all sorts of colours.

They also had platters of fruit on all the tables for ppl to nibble on

Couple of downsiders, firstly that the floor is VERY slipperly, we were rubbing ice cubes into our shoes rto make them go soggy to get a better grip, and also for the number of ppl that were ther , it was quite crowded at times.

Overal though i had a really good night, and its worth just one visit just to see the flashing floor and nice ceilng

:)

Yes Andrew--I would agree with Becci--most places teach NY Salsa, which apparently is more linear and slot-like and where you are allowed to do fast turns and spins. Cuban Salsa, from what I've experienced of it, is not completely different--the moves, beat and footwork are similar--but the moves are danced in a much more circular fashion and each beat danced to--apart from the pauses obviously--has to be clearly stepped--including the turns--no spinning round or sliding. The Cuban salsa lessons I go to sometimes are taught by a male, very smiley, cuban salsa teacher on Wednesdays at Halo cafe, Gloucester road. He is very quick to point out if you are dancing 'new york style ' i.e. spinning on the balls of your feet instead of stepping. I'ts not too difficult to change from one style to the other if you remember this--after all it's still Salsa :)
But I'm sure there are lot's of experienced Salsa dancers who could explain it better :)

For now i'm happy to stick to NY style, (the slotted style fits with me quite nicely)  but thanks for the info on Cuban style :)
