The Study
« on: April 03, 2008, 05:08 PM »

Yet another review of another salsa venue...

The Study in Cheltenham on a Friday night.

Its a little bit to a trek, but ive been up a few times when there hasnt been much gonig on on the Jive front.

Yet again, in a bar, but this is a much more 'civilised' bar, so its not dark at all, bright and airy in comaprison, must be aimed at the posh Cheltenham Folk!

This is a lesson night, not just a freestyle, and is on every Friday night , (unless double booked - eg Races weeks, check the website for closed dates)

Again a very friendly class, with a good mixture of people there. The freestyle runs from 10-12.

There is plenty of spectating space, and some nice comfy sofas in a little alcove in the corner.

There is street parking that is free, within a couple of mins walk to the venue, and if you cant find a freespace on the streetside, then there is a carpark round the back too.

Only annoynig thing i have found when ive driven there is Chetenhams sodding one way system, so if you plug the postcode into your TomTom you wont be able to get to the front door, as the main route wants to take you through a pedestrian area. So make sure you check a map before you leave just to find how to get round the back of the building.

Not sure about posh. You must be leaving before the clubs begin to empty and the zoo starts. But I agree about the one way system - as the song says:

... I've travelled each and every highway,
so you should listen when I say
'Avoid the Cheltenham inner ring road, especially on a Friiiidayyyy'

Yours poshly,

Mark x

if you are eating breakfast please avert your gaze now  >:D

- linking Bex?s club XL (she big on it, cringe) thread :

one downside is the Loos......, hmmmm go in backwards and dont look down and try not to tocuh anything! they were grim so only use if you are absolutley busting.

they can't be worse than the ones in the 'Dug out' in bristol - went in there once early '80s - hated it. My digs in Old Crosby, Scunny. 'boasted' : 2 doors down 'drug rehab. centre', next to 'bail hostel' (both now closed) then a pretty rough pub, didn't frequent  (blood, glass and puke on the pavement), police raids and Coop funeral parlour opposite, rows of little brick houses - but no one bothered me, not of the indigenous pop. anyway. One or two young men whom I assumed had become radicalized religiously, seemed to find me so attractive that they would cross the road to share the same line along the pavement. However, only in the relatively comfortable area where i live, have I had any real bovver.

I might have said before that one can meet some of the nicest people in the seemingly worst places and vice-versa (but I thought Scunny had a certain small town charm). Dunno about Cardiff but would subjectively put Cheltenham in the affluent class.

More Loos News : My now ex-boss accused me of leaving ?pubes? (they had a ?pub watch? scheme in Scunny) on the men?s urinals ? part of my end of day job but naturally, i didn?t want to ?split hairs?. Never mind ? hopefully I can get something local particularly in view of an article I read yesterday with a prediction from an ?oil-man? of the $160 a barrel oil and with Bristol having the worst city traffic congestion in the UK.

Such humiliation but low stress, unlike here (sometimes out my depth and lots of pressure but happy memories) where I worked 3 years on site till  nagged into coming back to take the path to career oblivion. Can vaguely recall (I could be wrong about the instrument) a SAR (synthetic aperture radar) image from ERS1 of  NE Lincs. with the efflux from the steel works clearly visible. Privatised British Steel got some EU money to put in the Gas recovery system at the BOS plant - then I end up working there.

Not sure if I would want to be associated with UK plc anyhow  - can?t even get a few people on a plane with their luggage ? the place is going down the toilet alright. If one is out in the cold with the private sector it might be wise to be afraid, be?  :o

Must get the book I came across recently : ?only the paranoid survive? ? sounds made for me.  :D :D :D

Dave, you remind me of Hammy from "Over The Hedge" sometimes - your posts whip from one place to another at a speed that blurs.

Stay focussed now, or I'll create you a special Blog section all of your own! :D

no no ...i don't want to be singled-out - not unless there is financial reward in it  :D I thought there was some connectivity there : Bex and Mark's references to the darker side of night life (inc. less salubrious loos from her other XL post) which sort of reminded me of my slide down the career ladder and Scunny - where i had some good 'larfs'.

 - sorry to flit around, seem to be getting my cage rattled a little but stuck alone i tend to put my thoughts down here  :( - i'll have to form a focus group of one.  :idiot2:

You'll have to 'stop me' JG  i think this is a fantastic track that gets played regularly on 'original fm' (the smiths), i'm sure the MIB would approve : - can't see it going down a bundle at Salsa, though and another diversion:

My welder friend from Salford (in video) said the guys at the works there would amuse themselves by feeding the pigeons bread containing calcium carbide - (used to make acetylene gas H-C-C-H) which would cause the creatures's internals to burst - he was a keen ornothologist and it didn't please him (or the birds)  :uglystupid2:
