Friday Fever at BAWA 25th April
« on: April 26, 2008, 08:59 AM »

We went to BAWA for the first time last night - and were really impressed by the venue, if a bit hot, but I guess that's unavoidable with so many bodies generating the heat.

Really enjoyed the evening,   :) :) :) I like the way that the seating is arranged there - more like a nightclub with lots of space away from the dancefloor to socialise.

The shoe sale in the foyer was very very tempting - but persuaded myself that bright red sparkly shoes would only bring attention to my feet - not sure I need that really!

Was really hoping to go to the next one - but going to see Jools Holland at the Arboretum the same day so will have to miss it  :'(

Another great dance  :)
I really enjoyed the impromptu  floor shows
Nic  and Alison?s lindy demo
Mark and Jax robo dance
Mark and Lizzy just enjoying themselves
and Bex and Matt line dance

the only sad part was coming home to find Humphrey Littleton had passed away  :(

Yes, it was a good night but not one of their best in my opinion.  In fact it was only a 3 T shirt night (see previous postings) as they played an awful lot of what was to me awful "music" that sounded all the same, and it was loud as well - or I am just getting old, or even worse turning into my Dad?  A lot of the "music" was a sort of faster beat/tempo, sort of headbanging disco kind of stuff to which found it difficult to get some kind of rhythm going and boring to dance to - and I am not the only one who thought so.  We also had quite a few of those damn songs which start and stop in the middle, that have a change of beat/tempo mid song and then carry on, and some which I wasn't quite sure if they have actually finished or not.
I just wish they played a better mixture, some fast yes, but mix it up a bit, play a better variety of music with more of a mixture of style, tempo and beat - what I would call "dancing" music and not "headbanging" stuff.  They did on the last few times I have been there and I really enjoyed it and had a brilliant night and not only did I thank them in person but also praised them on this site, so it' s not like I always moan and groan about things on here.
It was a lot like I said before in previous postings about some of the bands they get at the BAWA on Sunday nights.  Last week the Firebirds were playing and whereas they look good and are a good entertaining sort of band after a while they just sounded all the same. They again played mostly the faster stuff with the same sort of beat/tempo for most of the night.
But, it wasn't all bad news last Friday night.  I did get the chance to dance a few times with Mrs Gimber and I really enjoyed dancing with her. Mr Gimber, Sir, you are indeed a very lucky man in more ways than one - as I am sure you fully appreciate!

I guess different people have different ideas of what headbanging stuff is - but as a former headbanger that still does it occasionally I'm a bit puzzled by this description of the music!
I didn't hear any Motorhead, ACDC, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath etc - I'd have been first up on the floor had any of that been played  ;)   :)   ;)

Yes one of those caught me out
To make matters worse I was dancing with  Kat

But lots of tract I really enjoyed
Van Morrison Moon Dance
Two Pink Matinee tracks
One or two golden oldies
And some really smooth stuff around midnight

Yes, the Bawa does seem to be playing a lot of fast, loud, samey, clubbing music lately, (I don't mean rock or heavy metal),--lots of people have been commenting on it.

BAWA is usually a bit more "clubby" in its music than other venues and more likely to play a track with an added club drum beat, e.g. Mike Oldfield's Moonlight Shadow.

I found the music slightly more varied than usual and particularly enjoyed a Latin phase fairly early on and also the softer stuff around midnight and beyond. While Latin, show tunes, slow interpretative and (odd but true, must be my age) out and out disco are my clear favourites it's always good to get out a bit and try to shake it to other stuff.

So, like Phil, I had a good time but was also saddened to hear on the radio as I drove home that "Humph" had died. Not many people, let alone those in their eighties, could hope to match wits with Paul Merton but he could. My wife could tell that I was feeling a bit low and asked what was wrong. When I said about Humph and that an innuendo in his honour might help she said she wasn't great on innuendos but she could see I needed cheering up so she gave me one.

And on that note, sad but also celebratory I hope, I'll wish Humph well on his final journey.

...wash your mouth out  :police: >:D >:D

i think this counts as headbanging music from my first ever rock album purchase : - complete with drum solo  :(

i once tried head banging but couldn't smell or taste anything for several months afterwards.

I guess Purple are bit raucous but if Amy Winehouse is acceptable why not some Grace (an original wild 'rock chick' and still around,  she reminds me, facially, of a lady i sometimes see at clifton)

- and thanks the fans without.... (i know a version of 'somebody to love' gets played but i like the undoctored originals) Posted 'white rabbit' before but i just think the performance captivating.

ps : i wondered if Karen is strumming 'cumbya'  :D

Too much religion in that one for me.   You'll have to have another guess as to what I am playing  ;) :) ;)

Good grief, there is someone on this Planet who doesn't know?   :o   ;D  One of the best dry wits about, Bex.  As Mark said, also the master of the double entendre!  See Mark's email for the general idea........

He will be sadly missed (Humph that is)!

Long live Mrs Trellis!  8)
