Salsa Sabrosa at Java Friday 16th May
« on: April 28, 2008, 02:41 PM »

We are thinking of going along to this - will be first attempt at Salsa though, so a bit apprehensive.  The 'Bristol Facebook Wrinklies' are going along that night - for those of you who are now very puzzled, that is a social group for more mature members of facebook.

Just wondered whether anyone on here might be going along, or if anyone could let me know how salsa is taught - in a similar way to leroc?

Look forward to hearing any comments  :)

This event is really mainly a Salsa dance with a short fun lesson to start with--a bit like some Le-roc dances begin with a short lesson prior to the dance. So if you havn't done any Salsa before you might be better doing a few of their regular lessons first on Mondays at 8-15 for beginners. They used to be @ Que Pasa & then the Funky Greek in Corn St but next week --Bank holiday monday ,they are moving to Oceana on the waterfront.
Lessons are similar to jive in that people move round, but they seem to be mainly taught in bars/clubs so can be quite cramped & crowded, and as the teachers are usually in the middle of a circle ,on the same level, can be  more difficult to see.Also--beware--it's mostly taught by just one teacher who uses the pupils to demo with--so you will find yourself in the centre of the circle, on full display at some point!! Music is generally a lot faster and less
varied than jive. There are loads of different lessons in Bristol--most nights of the week actually.
Hope that helps--Becci can probably tell you more ;)

Thanks for the info, but I  never got to the Salsa night as it ended up being cancelled!

Maybe some other time, but not Oceana -  17 year old daughter and friends have started going there!
