An idea for a series of "specials" classes
« on: April 07, 2005, 11:59 AM »
I'd like to share a thought with you on how to run a series of specials classes.

It's just an idea - nothing arranged at the moment, I'm just curious as to how such a concept would be received.

Scenario 1: serial specials classes.

A series of classes are put on, but due to the nature of what is taught, the subsequent classes cannot be attended unless the prior ones have been attended first.

Scenario 2: modular specials classes.

If there are 3 "level 1" technique classes, any two of them could be attended to earn enough "points" to do the final (series) of specials classes.  But the final classes cannot be attended until the right number of "points" have been earned.

I must admit to quite liking the concept, but I could see it causing trouble if people thought they were good enough and that the points didn't apply.

Just a thought!

John.

Defiantly like the ideal were you cannot attend a special class unless you have reached a certain level of competency

Yeah, that's always a kicker, ain't it?

But then, how could you enforce a level of competency, unless you watch the class and kick out people who are no good or dangerous?

I must admit, I've done classes before now, and have reached the conclusion that "OK, this is beyond me at present" and voluntarily left the floor for the safety of myself and others.

It's one of those real nasty things - organisers have very little control over it.

I don't like the idea of the serial classes, as it'd be tough if you happen to be away for one of them, as you couldn't take part in any subsequent classes. The points one is better, but people currently have very different levels of skills and experience. And what do you do with all those experienced Bristolian dancers? Do you make them do the basic technique courses? Or do you have some method of evaluating their ability?

Well, as I stated, that's the sticking point, isn't it?

Hmmm, food for thought.

Unless you did a "3 points or x years experience" thing?

And at 12 points they'd take your dancing licence away?
