Sales of specialised footwear and flamboyant dancing costumes have risen by more than 100 per cent on the internet auction site eBay as the BBC phenomenon grips the nation.

And sales of Cheryl Cole memorabilia have doubled as the Girls Aloud singer emerged as a national favourite since becoming a judge on the X Factor.

Encouraged by journalist John's brave efforts in the face of the judges' fierce criticism, the figures suggest men all over the country are following his lead and tripping the light fantastic.

Tap dancing shoes, satin rumba pants and sequined jump suits all saw a huge boost in sales.

The revelation comes in a report from eBay which shows sales patterns following national cultural trends in 2008.
