Nigel & Nina @ St Bons Saturday 23/4
« on: April 19, 2005, 02:48 PM »
Anyone else going?

Anyone know what I've let myself in for?  :D

From what I've seen on the net they're meant to be really good teachers, so I hope it will be good.

Yes, I'm going and I expect it will be really good too-- I hope the emphasis will be on dancing to slower ,blues type music.

w.r.t. 'blues' music - is that like as in John Mayal's Blues Breakers (an ancient group whose name I have probably misspelt but had members like Eric Clapton - I believe) or that R&B stuff that makes me feel like I have had 8 pints of Old Peculiar and tried running up Park St.?

PS : could it be more oranges than blues as it appears that tutor has  been 'Tango-ed' >:D

A quote from Nigel & Nina's site

"I?m often asked - ?What is Blues??

As a Musician I would answer that ?Blues is a set of chord changes in a 12 or 16 bar pattern, differentiated with flattened 3rd?s, 5th?s & 7th?s often used by players as a basis for improvisation?

The Dancer?s answer is more complex. ?Blues is an elaborate fusion of ideas from every dance style, from the mambo of Dirty Dancing to the romanticism of Ballet. The tempo and space given by the music allows a freedom of interpretation and improvisation that is seldom found in partner dances?

Obvious innit?  :D

Thanks - but ya got me thare. (I guess Status Quo are exponents of the 12 bar blues?!?) I recall something about blues being of African origin and built on 'a sort of number base 5' rather than 'an octave of 8'. Before I display any further ignorance it's more the tone of the music which I think modern R&B displays - a high pitched whining, as perhaps a la  Mariah Carey (ok to watch with sound turned down - as George Harrison said of the Spice Girls) - which I find 'distressing'! :'(

From Nigel and Nina teaching blues-style, I would expect slower moves, less of the "tension/compression" feel we get from faster jive, and an emphasis on the musical phrasing. They are brilliant teachers and stunning dancers
