How would you classify Modern Jive music?
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:14 PM »
Hi!

Bit technical question. I'm starting to separate my dance music collection by style so that if I want to practice a particular type of styling when training I can easily isolate appropriate tracks. I can also randomise that folder, so that I can have the challenge of dancing to an unknown track, while still being sure that it will be the right style. What folders would you have for LeRoc music?

I would say that style is not the same as genre; eg. I would probably put pop, most rock and disco of mid-speed into the same folder because I would dance to them in more-or-less the same way. Or should I? Should I group all Latin tracks together or should I break them up based on what kind of latin dance they sound like they belong to? (Salsa and Tango being the most common I think) Or am I wasting my time?   :idiot2: :P What do you all think?

Probably if you're doing that you may be better off sorting your CDs by alphabetical order, then making a database of your dance tracks - each track can be used for x different styles of dancing.

Then you can search on the jiveable tracks, and lay your hands on the CDs easily too. :)

Some of the songs can be used in many different dance styles, though I find modern jive is very flexible and can use more than other styles.

John.

All my dance music is in one folder on my computer and mp3 player. I don't have the CDs as most of it is downloads. As you can imagine, having 500+ Jive tracks in one folder makes it hard to find things, so that's why I wanted to break it down by the style of the music- to keep Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas separate from Everything by Michael Buble!

Still unsure about what different categories I should have though...

Depends on your player, but you might be able to do this using playlists - e.g. have a swing playlist, a pop/chart playlist, a europop one, etc.  A track might be on multiple playlists - so you could look it up in any "genre" playlist and find it that way.
