Review: Clifton LeRoc Tea Dance, Sunday 24th January 2010
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:01 PM »
Hi All,

This is the first tea dance that I have been to, and I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive as I had the harshest of critics with me - my children!

The venue was the Filton Folk Centre - the usual location for the weekend dances, and as ever this was a clean, well-provisioned environment, and quite safe for children.  We arrived just after opening, and promptly helped ourselves to chocolate corn-flake cakes, lemon cake, and (free) squash and coffees.

The music was the usual kind of mix - plenty to jive to, but not much of any other style such as ballroom.  As I only know jive this was not a problem for me though!  (Perhaps a few childrens' tracks or ballroom tracks may be useful in future - as there were quite a few people who looked like they could do ballroom there).

The cakes were certainly up to standard, and Sarah (alias Pricey from the forum) did a wonderful job as the food hostess.

Although Rebecca and Dylan (our 6 and 4 year old children) didn't mix with the other kids this time, I'm sure they would in future - it was all a bit new and they're quite shy initially.  By the end of the time though they were running around a bit, joining in with the dancing a bit, and starting to relax and enjoy things.

It was very very nice seeing people a bit more socially, and being able to take the children along.

Although this was my first time at such an event, I was very pleased by how friendly and not business-like it seemed, and I am certainly going to make the effort to go along to the next one on the 21st February 2010.

I think that this kind of event injects a bit of much-needed soul and personality into the LeRoc scene, and I thoroughly applaud the effort made today.

Long may these events go on.

John.

P.S. The kids decided it was a good thing - they asked if they could stay all night!  Honestly, you'd swear they were acting like grown-up dancers... :)  They're also asking when they can go again, though I don't know if that's because of the dancing or the 6 corn-flake cakes they each ate...

The Bristol LeRoc / modern jive dance classes are diverse and provide a blend of teaching styles and music styles that are complimentary. If you want to keep them... go to your classes and support them! Check out the free dance, music and theatre clipart images in the new Clipart Library

Yes, I agree, the Tea Dance was indeed very nice.  In our case it was good to able to take my 83 year old Mum along with us, who enjoyed watching then coming back to our house for tea afterwards.

Hope to make it to next one  :)
