Rhetorical question
« on: July 21, 2010, 11:00 PM »
Why do people say they dance, say 'Ceroc'; bit tired of this corporate brainwashing - the dance is really called modern jive, lol, u dont hear people say they dance 'Misealcuba' or 'clubcubana', they dance salsa or dance 'Eduardo' or 'Tangoedge', they dance Argentine Tango, grr..& Ceroc is basically modern jive & is spread over a host of different modern jive classes...

Have you tried to persuade a Cerocer that the dance they learn is the same dance as LeRoc and it's all Modern Jive?  They won't believe you!

For the same reason people "Hover", rather than "Dyson" or vacum , the carpet
Coming up this soon   is the Leroc Masquerade Winter Ball
This forum is the Bristol Leroc Forum, but has a special section for Ceroc, as if Ceroc is a different dance
When it started Leroc, my Leroc Teacher gave me the distinct impression Ceroc was a completely dance and that anyone who danced Ceroc, walked left handed  spat, a lot and had two heads
The term “Modern Jive” is relatively new and general public have never heard of it

I don't think I have ever heard any one say "I am off to Modern Jive dance or class tonight"

Some days, I think there is a large difference.
Some days, I don't.
Some days, I think that leroc vs ceroc = hippies vs big bad corporations.
Some days, footwork is important, some days, it isn't.

Opinions vary.

Power to the people - dance where you feel you should, and walk away if what they do offends you.
The Bristol LeRoc / modern jive dance classes are diverse and provide a blend of teaching styles and music styles that are complimentary. If you want to keep them... go to your classes and support them! Check out the free dance, music and theatre clipart images in the new Clipart Library

It's all to do with branding. All the best brands become the generic term. For example, when I worked in Marketing for Reckitt & Colman we wanted people so see the "Jif" lemon juice that came in lemon shaped squeezy bottles to be seen as the only thing to put on your pancakes. I'm sure it worked for a while.

I'm sure the term "Hoover" will die out in the end and be replaced with "vacuum" or some other term. Especially of someone like Dyson does a branding exercise with a big budget.

they might in wales where there is 'South Wales modern jive' and so they should, I think it might have been called LeRoc a dance when things started & Ceroc copied this shortly after, but with so many clases it shpoul dbe called modern jive imho - John Sweeneys been running a website for years called modernjive.com, fo rmy money Ceroc has pretty much developed into a cult these days ;-)

I suppose this depends on your definition of the word "cult"

One I particularly like is

Quote
A group whose beliefs or practices are reasonably considered strange

While we are on the subjects of cults . Is becoming  a cult, or achieved cult status , necessary a bad thing ?

That depends.

There is nothing more dangerous than blind love, or blind faith.

If somebody is passionate about something, fair enough.

Most people don't care how a class is run, or how the class organisers behave towards each other, so long as they have a happy experience, with friends, with good music, in a nice environment.

It's the same as shirts.  You see one you like, you buy it.  But where did it come from?  Who made it? Was anybody exploited during its manufacture?  But... you like the shirt, so you buy it.

Go figure.
