St Bons Sat 21st - good! 8)
« on: May 22, 2005, 10:51 AM »
Hiya All,

Last night was really good for a whole number of reasons!   :)

including:
Not too busy (Strange remark I know...) - We all had a chance to spread out a bit...
Good dancers there... (the fab regulars... plus some other faces.... Glad Carol stayed around... she is so stylish!... a pleasure to watch! )

Becky_High_heels_baby,
Thanks for praticing WCS with me!... you and Matt with your little workshop in the courner!  You guys rock!   :)
....um... and sorry about stubbing your right toe..... twice!   :-[
...I must remember "Back!...Back!....   ;D
.......and that thing about not listening.... hey, I'm a bloke!... I just trying to keep the beat at the mo, you know!   ::)

Lou_Drives_a_cute_buggy_baby,
Thanks for the Leading - hhhmmm.... interesting swapping the roles.  Dunno how you girls spin all night.... I was dizzy by end of 2 tracks!  (tried spooting, but balance went way off!)

And the WCS - oh yeah.... practice practice is always good....   :D

Well, we didn't make it last night,  :'( as down at Melksham Friday night, a one hour latin lesson on Saturday morning, an hour and a half practice on early Saturday afternoon and a two hour work shop later that day, so I was a tiny, weeny bit pooped!  Hmmmm, better start eating spinach!!!

Anyway, report on Carol Haines workshop..............fabulous!  It was the rhumba walk at the end that I really want to perfect wow, what a walk!!   :)  Loads of hip rotations and hip pops - so now all you Guys have to do it to give the Lady her eight beats every now and again to show you how good we all are at it!  There are 38 Ladies out there now who would like to show how it is done!  ;D

Carol's workshop was everything I'd hoped for.

For ages, I knew I really wanted to work on styling, and that age-old problem of what to do when the guy gives you space!  :o. I had some ideas that I'd seen other ladies do, but it was fantastic to have Carol (who is such a talented & stylish lady) give us both technique and ideas on how we can make the moves more individual. I need to work on the Rhumba walk and the rotation with the hip bumps, because they look so stylish.

The freestyle was really enjoyable too. It was quieter than usual - but I agree with Marty that it was kinda nice that way, because there was more space. Plus it wasn't too quiet that the atmosphere suffered. Plus - it was great to watch the ladies putting Carol's suggestions to such good effect.

MartyBaby - trying to stop you from spinning was the challenge!  ;D You seemed to relish it! And the WCS was fun.  :)

I really enjoyed the workshop too. Carol was so friendly she put everyone at ease and I was pleased (relieved!) to find the content suitable for all standards. She explained everything very clearly. I'm trying to remember all the things we did - not being organised enough to take a notepad. I would certainly like a DVD if / when she does one - then Andrew could have a go too  :D. Who'd have thought I could change my spare flipper into a 'pretty hand' by thinking about holding a ball ::).

Had to scoot off early from the dance as I was feeling increasingly iffy :(.

Hey it was fun doing the WCS, im so pants at it though, i only know a little bit from line dancing, and what David and Lilly have taught in their workshops.

My toe was ok, i think my poor lil tootsies were already in pain from wearing heels to worry about a stubbed toe.

Well next time if you dont go back when im comming forward ill just trample on you  >:D >:D

As for the Carol workshop it was so cool. a total tummy workout there! now I can wiggle even more. I love that walk she taught at the end, though my attempt wasnt quite to the desired effect. Oh well, something new to work on though..,,

Hope you're feeling better now, Julia. *hugs*

Things I remember from the workshop (my notes - I hope they'll make sense to those who were at the class - please feel free to add stuff, too!):

Posture:- chin up, look at partner, weight forward over front foot - tits & toes.
Side to side step:- rolling the foot, using the balls of the feet, pushing into the ground.
Salsa step:- front feet at 2 o'clock & 10 o'clock, keep in straight line, back foot at right angles, turn the head.
Legs relaxed - bend knee when needed.
Hip rotations - small, medium, large(!),  forwards, middle, back, figure of eight (and reverse). Hip bumps between 2 panes of glass.
Pretty hands - also on hip, shoulder, etc. Spare arm up or out. Tennis ball, pingpong ball, marble.
Single spins - spotting
Frame!
Support yourself in dips & drop. Extend arm for line. Don't drop head.
Hand on chest if required in seducers.
Less footwork in First Move (Bristol footwork has less steps anyway!  ;))
Keep right foot placed when rotating with wiggle.
I still have no on how to do that Salsa walk! It was rotate, drop, sit, step, or something.... help!  ::)

Excellent notes Lou!

Re the Salsa walk, it is a rhumba walk!  Blooming difficult, as it is a bit like tapping your head and rubbing your tummy!!!

I am thinking of getting a DVD on the basics, so perhaps that will help?  Otherwise, next time I see you, we can see if we can remember the various bits together!

Re the Salsa walk, it is a rhumba walk!

Of course it is! I must've had a senior moment.  :o

Whenever I try putting it together it looks more like a rhumatic lurch....  ;) So, yes please - any help gratefully received!

Hip rotations - small, medium, large(!),  forwards, middle, back, figure of eight (and reverse). Hip bumps between 2 panes of glass.

Thanks for your list, Lou - very helpful. On my hols in Brighton I had a brainstorm session. Think I also remember hip lifts (forwards, middle and  back) as well as the rotations and figure of 8 horizontal forwards and in reverse plus figure of 8 vertical (the panes of glass one).

Pretty hands - also on hip, shoulder, etc. Spare arm up or out. Tennis ball, pingpong ball, marble.

There was also hands together above head, fingers pointing out then bring behind head, round neck and down as you undulate down then back up rotating hips and moving shoulders all without falling over.

I think Carol said with the Rumba walk to swing the same shoulder and foot forwards, swivel the hips the other way as you bring the other leg up to it, straightening the front leg and sitting back onto the hip as you bring the other leg and shoulder forwards????

It feels like walking backwards forwards when I try it so I've probably got that wrong somewhere along the line.

Less footwork in First Move (Bristol footwork has less steps anyway!  ;))

I had a really interesting chat with Andy McGregor about Bristol footwork...  :-\

Feeling much better thanks. We had some lovely dances with the folks in Hove and Findon.

Bless Andy. How high (and sparkly) were his heels this weekend?  ;)

Welcome to the dark world of footwork conversations....  ;D
