Who's going to the WCS workshop run by Sherif on 11th December?

I can't wait.  I'm a great admirer of Paul and Cat's teaching.  8) 8) 8)

Yes, they are brilliant - I have danced with Paul and he is a dream!

We can't go, due to 'family' commitments!  It is such a shame that it is being run the day after the Ball, as we can't go out to play two days in a row!  :(

I'm going. And I'm hoping that the legendary MartinHarper will wander down to keep me company?

Is there a demand for WCS in Bristol?

I know it's getting quite popular in London, but it seems that everyone around here is concentrating on their Argentine Tango lessons these days!

A number of MJers are turning up at Bristol Lindy classes (6+ each week) these could form a core of possible WCS dancers in future. I'd find it a distraction at the moment though

I would love to go to the wrokshop Lou, but as I said, we have 'family' commitments that day. Re the long term for WCS, I think it will get off the ground if we could have weekly lessons - it is a fabulous dance!

I did ask to book, but it's just occurred to me that I never got a response... :/
I guess I'll phone before leaving tommorrow, just to check.

Really good event today.  :) Excellent instruction from two top teachers (Cat's regular teaching partner, Lee, had to stand in for Paul Warden at late notice).  8)  And what about that cabaret at the end from Cat and Lee?   :P  8) :D

I really hope there'll be enough interest to make a Bristol WCS workshop a regular event (if only to save on the petrol!!!!).

Yep, I totally agree it was a good workshop. Nice to see a reasonable concentration on some of the more techniquey things rather than just the moves, too.

As to getting it more established in Bristol? - Hmm the jury is a bit more out on that (certailnly as far as I am concerned, anyway).

I thought two things.

Firstly the music being played did not (to my mind) suit a dance based in what we in the UK call "jive" moves. It was too slow and smoochy - more suited to Tango and/or foxtrot than a jive style dance. OK, each to his/her own on that and I don't know whether they were just playing ultra slow tracks because it was a taster workshop, of course. If you've done some elsewhere you may be able to tell me/us, I guess.

My feeling (as a result) was that it was an interesting and well taught workshop, but I didn't really fall in love with the dance.

Secondly (and more generally) I have played the game before of trying to learn a dance with only a small number of people doing (expensive) once a month workshops and it didn't really work. There weren't enough people there yesterday to make a viable West Coast Swing dance community in Bristol and I think (realistically) you'd need someone who was prepared to set up, publicise widely and teach weekly classes here at the more usual around a fiver charge in order to make it all happen.

Since I do dance lessons so that I can dance socially and not for their own sake, I have my doubts as to whether I'd go to another similar workshop.

I think that you're right - it's a numbers thing.

We went to a swing dance in Gloucester last night where there were about 120 people which was a nice number but they had come from all over the south of England and Wales & that's a dance with several regular weekly classes in the area.

Don't have a solution I'm afraid

I do!!!!  If only someone could persuade Simon Bowker to teach it here in Bristol on a weekly basis - then he would have enough people dancing WCS to sustain it and it should be cheaper than importing teachers from London!

Simon???

he seems to be,

it would be so cool if simon, and keeley / dawn did do the classes, im sure there would be interest in the bristol area, if people had the opportunity to dance it.

theres just not much interest cos not many people know about it, like a catch 22, thing.

COME ON SIMON WERE WAITING FOR AN ANSWER :) :) :)  (hint: the answer to the qustion is 'yes' )
