Swing: on the upswing or downswing?
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:10 PM »
Right, swing music, my favourite kind.  But...

After the rash of "new swing" that came out earlier last year, there hasn't been a lot of new swing around, or (dare I say it) there hasn't been a lot of new-style swing that actually moves me.

Do you think swing is still on the way up on the leroc scene, or on the way down, for popularity?

John.

Hi John,

Do we hear it a lot at the Elmgrove?
Can you stick Sounds bites onto this web Sites - like to hear some!    ;D

Swing stuff - Leroy brown, ain't that a kick in the head, it ain't what you do, etc.  Old swing-jive stuff.  Frank sinatra, Robbie Williams, Lisa Stansfield...

I love Swing music, although I also call it Blues.  Funnily enough I only commented the other day that I had not heard much of it recently at some of the Bristol venues and then a track was played last night at Kingswood!

Bring it on!   ;D

I am not sure Swing is fading away - what about

1) the recent Westlife swing album
2) Michael Buble (who has a new album out soon)

Also I heard a rumour that Robbie Williams may release a foillow-up to "swing when you're winning". Anyone know if thats true?

.. and I went to see Jules Holland at the CIA just before Christmas and I'd say that was probably a sell out gig!  (or does he count as boogie woogie!) :D :-\

Well, we try to play a fair amount of swing / blues at Elmgrove, with a mix of latin and some modern stuff - depends who gets to the music deck first really - David's music tastes any my music tastes are rather different!

The question is how do I rate Swing but the options seem to be how do other people rate it

I have to confess music names confuse me

What exactly is the difference between Swing and Blues

Blues is generally slower than swing, and often in a 12-bar format. Boogie woogie is much faster - often too fast for LeRoc.

I'm no music expert and I'm sure someone else could answer Phil's question far better than me, but to me all the swing music mentioned by John- and stuff like Michael Buble's 'Moondance ' &' Sway'-- is far more up tempo than blues and has a completely different feel to it--more lighthearted than blues. Isn't Blues slower , more sultry and with a more melancholy feel to it. Perhaps someone with more musical experience could elaborate. I certainly dont see the two types of music as the same though , although I like both. They play quite a bit of swing @ Kingswood--not as much Blues though as its much harder to dance to than swing-- unless you've been taught to Blues dance properly of course.

frimfram sauce! ;)
i think there is loads of new swing if you want to find it. check out eg  some music clips on amazon of 'yallopin' hounds' - swingtastic.
but yeah, i don't know if the tempo difference makes it blues or slow swing.. its all good stuff though and def should be part of a dance evening, IMHO.  ;D  ;D
