Was it hot enough in Torquay??  8)

We went to G&A's dance, which was quite nice.  The Oddfellows is an interesting venue with sort of well lit 'stage' type of dance floor so... bit nerve-racking even though all v friendly and good atmosphere.
Courage!

Tell us news from RBs?

Torquay was like a sauna - very draining but it didn't spoil our fun.

Great facilities, good food in the Hotel (and cakes at 12:30 am  :) - bang goes the diet  >:D ).

Fab teachers (Hasse & Marie in particular - he's like a young version of Graeme  :D )

You'll be pleased to know I can now lead a Whip (referred to as a Lindy Turn / Swingout  ::) )

Good tunes to dance to, good cabarets generally good fun

We've already booked to go again next year - highly recommended

Glad you enjoyed the Friday dance - the next one is 28 July and we're away again  >:(  >:(

G&A are on hols until the first Monday in July so no more classes til then (where was M last night? he missed a good one)

good to hear you had a great time!

haven't been to any weekend things for ages, but quite fancy Ryan and Jenny's one in August..

Michael wanted to come to the class last night, guess he just got stuck working til late - poor ol' thing.

I'll let him know about the end of classes.. I knew G&A do a kind of odd term dates..

Meantime, if you get desperate, you could think about travelling to Stroud for Jim and Lisa's Tuesday class of beginners and intermediates  (7.30 til 10.30, so worth the drive maybe!)  - they're on til mid July.

See ya!
Claire
PS I always wondered what the whip corresponds to...!

Blimey I'd have to be desperate to end up anywhere near Stroud!  :D

Unfortunately Tuesday is Julia's band night.

It's only 2 weeks without classes and one of those we're on hols in sunny Brighton anyway

BTW G&A are off on a cruise around the Baltic to celebrate a "special" birthday for Ann - awww ain't Graeme nice

Monday 3 July Stuff

For beginners the only new thing not covered by my previous ramblings was Jig Kicks

Step pattern is back step kick down kick down

the move involves the leader pulling the follower into a tigjt hold after the back step left hand (leaders) hich with a gentle clasp grip. The right hand is active in pushing (only gently) so that her weight is shifted so that she matches your footwork - you are kicking left down, pull her to the right so she kicks right down and vice versa. On the back step the leader brings his hand back down to waist level as for a normal closed hold. It's a tricky one but worth perfecting.

Resting Jig kicks variation Back step left down (place ladies right over own shoulder) right down left down etc until bored - to exit back step after right down having been sure to regather ladies hand.

Intermediates

2 x Lindy Turn (described before)
into
6 count entry to Horse & Cart (described before)
back step bounce kick ball change into
8 counts of Shorty George
back step triple (release right hand and draw lady in front) triple l(lady free spin) catch L to R
Texas Tommy maintaining R to R at end but also taking L to L under
back step triple raise R ready to push triple (Lady turns R now low L high) step step (lady turns under arm) step step (man turns under arm) triple (release R into push turn)

Last normal lesson last night - Shag & Balboa for the next 4 weeks

Beginners

Triple step footwork

3x closed basic into

2 x Cross steps in Jockey hold
(mans footwork lady mirrors)
Back step (LR)
Kick left
Left down to the right of R foot (hence cross step)
Back Step (RL)
Kick Right
Right down to Left of L foot

style points for using sweeping kicks!

2x Jockey basic take Followers R hand with left into

Sendout
Back Step (allow lady to drift a little behind move R hand to small of ladies back)
triple step (man uses bowling action to send lady away, lady turns to face because of hand hold not through choice)
Triple step (man moves forward, lady back)

into Change places
style points for ladies using a twist twist instead of a backstep

Intermediates
2x Lindy Turn

footwork variation for lindy turn
replace triple on 7 8 with R kick R Down Tap left behind right
Replace next back step wtih L Kick L Down R Down behind L

Spring move
Man 8 count Charleston Kick footwork, ladies 8 count kick footwork
1 2 back step
3 4 kick down lead lady into 1st part of change places release hand
5 6 kick and with R hand catch lady's right arm and send her back to where she came from
7 8 kick down catch L to R

repeat but on second catch R to R

Lasso into wrong side jockey

Charleston footwork backstep kick down as usual then big lean back double kick turning into regular jockey position

tuck turn into open hold

first part of 6 count change places but stop with back to partner placing her R hand on your R Shoulder

6 7 8 into Charleston steps starting on kick with L

exit for man jump into left behind right & spin half turn to face partner
In reality ladies are unlikely to pick up on this but if they do their exit is left cross in front of right into spin to face partner.

{you had to be there really!}
